I’m Jeff Fee, and I am the Chief Executive Officer for PatientOne. I spent over 25 years in the healthcare industry on the hospital side of the equation. First working as an executive in Tennessee and then spending the last ten years in beautiful Montana as the chief executive for Providence Health and Services, Western Montana region. As you can imagine, being inside the belly of the industry, I’ve seen just how broken the system is and how unfriendly it can be to the patients interfacing with the healthcare system daily.
There is a lack of coordination in our healthcare system. It’s fragmented and complicated, hence, making it difficult to navigate for the patients. So one of the things we set out to do with PatientOne is to improve that primary delivery interface between the healthcare system and the population they serve – helping patients and their families better navigate their episodes of care.
At PatientOne, we have adopted a mindset of constant and continuous improvement. We improve both the clinic and patient-facing portions of the app by looking at the effectiveness of notifications sent out to patients and how much patients better engage their careteam as a result. By building processes that utilize data to improve those interactions, we hope to introduce health systems of all sizes to best practices for remotely monitoring the conditions of their patients.
Bearing in mind that healthcare teams want to adopt applications that fit into their daily workflow, we’re also continually looking at how our software can lessen the daily load on clinical staff. Initially focusing on surgical specialties, PatientOne’s success has seen clients build new use cases right out of the surgical episode – using our software for remote patient monitoring of chronic conditions and educating patients about their newly prescribed medications and durable medical equipment. I’m Erik Guzik, Chief Technical Officer for PatientOne. Three years ago, a doctor approached me to develop a solution to better prepare patients for surgery through interactive communication and video education. I had worked on developing learning management and assessment solutions in the past, so I was very interested in how patients, like students, might benefit from new forms of online education. Since then, the PatientOne platform has changed quite a bit, but improving communication and understanding between providers and patients remains at the heart of our solution.
I also have a background in economics, with an interest in the underlying cost drivers in the US healthcare system, including inefficiencies associated with administration and asymmetric information. PatientOne directly addresses these issues with a novel communication solution that provides real value and benefit for both patients and practices.
If you look at our founding team, we have a former CEO from a major hospital network in the Northwest. We have a practice administrator within a successful urology clinic. And we have an economics PhD. Beyond experience in software development, we bring expertise in the realm of healthcare and an understanding of the means by which we can better educate patients. With our extensive experience, we’ve created an innovative software solution that’s based on real-world best practices–with focus on usability and improving patient outcomes.

Discovering the right combination to unlock significant improvements begins with trial and error, but when done right yields the sort of wonderful results that, sadly, often eludes patients and their providers.
I came from a background in physics and engineering, so formal training during medical school built upon those years of problem solving and iteration. While I love to tinker, build and rebuild, I have the belief that the patient needs to be at the center of any new health tool or technology, and this forms the core of the great tools we are creating here.
I have first-hand experience on the many “parts” that have to work in unison during every clinical episode, and when you throw follow-up calls, insurance and billing into the mix, chaos ensues often leaving the patient confused. It’s all too easy to point out what’s wrong or inadequate, but more difficult to make an honest assessment without judging for judgment’s sake. If our platform does not improve care at your hospital or practice, we can’t overlook that because we’ve designed the software to track engagement metrics, display data suggestive of outcomes and based on evidence, flag outliers at the population level.
